From coal to retail

Barmston's colliery past has given way, in recent decades, to a very different economy: much of the area is now home to retail and business parks serving the western approach to Sunderland, close to the Nissan plant covered on this site's Washington page. It remains a useful marker of how thoroughly this stretch of Wearside has been remade since the coal industry ended.
