A township brought into the city
Gosforth developed as a township and later an urban district on Newcastle's northern edge, only formally absorbed into the city as its boundaries expanded outward through the 20th century. That separate history is still felt today: Gosforth keeps its own High Street and a distinct identity within the wider city.
Gosforth Park's racecourse has staged horse racing since the 1800s, making it one of the longest-running sporting venues anywhere in Tyne and Wear.
Racecourse and parkland
Gosforth Park, a large area of green space on the district's eastern edge, has hosted horse racing at Newcastle Racecourse since the 19th century — giving Gosforth a rare combination of suburban streets and open parkland just minutes from Newcastle's centre.
Gosforth today
Now one of the city's most sought-after residential areas, Gosforth is known for its Victorian and Edwardian villas, an independent-shop-lined High Street, and easy Metro access into central Newcastle.
