On the road to Blaydon

Scotswood Road, running along the Tyne through this district, is the very road described in "The Blaydon Races" — the 1862 song covered on this site's Blaydon page — as the route the singer takes out of Newcastle towards the races. Historically an industrial riverside district (Vickers-Armstrong's works extended out this far), Scotswood was also home to one of the Tyne's road crossings, the Scotswood Bridge, and today is a mostly residential district on Newcastle's western edge.
