Shiney Row
A former mining village between Houghton-le-Spring and Washington.
Coalfield country
Shiney Row grew, like its neighbours Houghton-le-Spring and Washington, out of the County Durham coalfield that once ran beneath this whole area. Now a residential village within the City of Sunderland, it sits at the western edge of the borough, closer in character to the historic mining settlements further inland than to the coast.
