Silksworth
A former colliery village turned sporting destination.
From colliery to ski slope
Silksworth grew as a coal-mining village on Sunderland's southern edge, its pit closing along with so many others across Wearside through the later 20th century. The old colliery land was later redeveloped into the Silksworth Sports Complex, whose dry ski slope has introduced generations of Wearside children to skiing and snowboarding without ever needing snow.
