Shipbuilding on the north bank

Southwick sits on the Wear's north bank, its streets built up through the 19th and 20th centuries to house the shipyard and dock workers who powered Sunderland's rise as the world's busiest shipbuilding town, a story told in full on this site's Sunderland page. Like much of Wearside, it has been through waves of clearance and renewal since the yards closed.
