On the high ground

Wrekenton sits on notably high ground south of Gateshead town centre, its name likely reflecting that elevated position. Like much of the surrounding borough, it developed through the coal-mining era before becoming a predominantly residential district, close to the Team Valley Trading Estate that reshaped so much of Gateshead's economy from the 1930s onward.
