High Spen

A Derwent Valley village shaped by the same coal industry as its neighbours.

A Derwent Valley colliery village

High Spen developed as a mining village in the Derwent Valley, part of the same coalfield that ran through Chopwell and Rowlands Gill nearby. Its terraced streets and chapel buildings still carry the layout typical of a purpose-built colliery settlement, now a quiet residential village on Gateshead's western fringe.
