Beside Gibside
Rowlands Gill grew in the Derwent Valley on Gateshead's western edge, its fortunes tied to the same coal and iron industries as its neighbours Winlaton and Swalwell. Its best-known neighbour today is Gibside, the National Trust's landscaped 18th-century estate with its dramatic Column to British Liberty and Palladian chapel, a short distance from the village and one of the most visited spots in the whole borough.
